Hello,
Thanks for visiting. I’d like to share with you one of my income sources outside the internet. I drive a taxi. Yes, you read that right!

On Monday, Dec. 8, 2008 will be 4 weeks since I have returned to driving cab. This is not a profitable source of income now.

It seemed that my dismissal from the last ‘paying job‘ left me with nearly no income at all. I had to do something!

Here at FLR I had just began to do some regular trading. As soon as the LTCO thread returned that all stopped. I did not think much of it at first. I was in the mindset that this return was new to some and would be played with, like a new toy, hoping the novelty would ware off soon and things would get back to normal.

This has not happened here at FLR. Finding interested traders has been quite difficult, until recently. Currently awaiting 3 traders to complete their trade agreements; I am actively trading. I did green another site the other day. Though that was a payout to me, this $20 will be helpful. I am $11 closer to paying what I owe in ‘back rent’ on my home. Then there is the ‘front rent’. Due again on the 14th of each month. Remember that there are some expenses when you green. This particular green ran about $9.00 total cost.

I’d like to take a moment to thank all my current and past traders, who have completed trades and all the steps in their iTrader.

Now, on to this taxi business:
Myrtle Beach, SC is almost ghostly. This usually does not happen until January. So I picked up my taxi at 6:45 PM. And worked until 4:00 AM. My day driver was late turning in his cab. He was supposed to be there at 6:00 PM.

I booked about $44.00 on the meter. That meant that I had to give the company $22.00. There was a $6.00 gas charge, so that brings the total pay out to $28.00.

I scored only one $5.00 bounty and I did received $5.00 from a driver whom I took home. (Normally I wouldn’t take money from drivers, to take them home, as long as they aren’t going far from the office. I attempted to refuse it. The driver shoved it into my hand. I said no again. When he refused to take it back I kept it.)

Check this out, it is a list of my money amounts earned on the meter and what I recieved for each run.
  1. $5.35 with one passenger and I received $6.00
  2. $5.70 with two passengers and I received $7.00 (I charged $1.00 extra passenger fee)
  3. $12.00 with four passengers and I received $15.00 ( I charged $2.00 extra passenger fee)
  4. $10.95 with one passenger and I received $12.00 (This went to an adult club. I collected a $5.00 Bounty
  5. $6.40 with two passengers and I received $9.00 (I charged $1.00 extra passenger fee)
  6. $2.90 with one passenger and I received $3.00
So there you have it folks. After doing the math you can see that I took home a grand total of $24.00. But wait, I didn’t actually take home that amount.

I stopped at Wal-Mart and bought some things we need, such as Dog Food, Shampoo, Coffee, Milk and a couple other necessities. This totaled $17.00.

In the end that left me a grand total of $12.00 to put toward my over due bills.

Let’s hope that tonight will be better!

    Saturday wasn't much better!

Ok, Saturday night wasn't as bad, but it was BAD ENOUGH!!

Here is my activity for Saturday Dec. 6, 2008 -
Picked up my cab at 6:30 and turned in around 4:00 AM
    • $30.90 with 4 passengers - I received $40(Only Charged $2 in extras)
    • $30.10 with same 4 passengers - I received $40 (Only Charged $2in extras)
    • $9.20 with 2 passengers - I received $12 (Charged $1 in extras)
    • $5.70 with 1 passenger - I received $10
    • $24.95 with 1 passenger - I received $25
    • $2.55 with 1 passenger - I received $10.
Ok now if your doing the math you see that my fares equal $103.85. This totally SUCKS for a Saturday Night in a party town. In the off season this seems to be good.

I owed the company 1/2 of my total fares (less extras - the extras, bounties and tips go to the driver (me))

So if your following the math you see that I collected a total of $137.

    Expenses:
    • I gave the company $52.
    • I spent $5 on food.
    • I put $12 in gas. (which would have only been $8 had the day driver not tried to scam)
Leaving me with a whole $68 to use toward my overdue bills, food, cigs and gas to get back and forth to work.

I didn't spend the usual cleaning expenses, as I did not clean the cab after I was done. Now this is a BIG NO NO! We are supposed to clean our cab after each shift.

I was informed on Friday that I now have an assigned cab. The Day Driver does not clean the cab. It was cold (not an acceptable excuse) and I wasn't feeling well (still not an acceptable excuse).

I am going to start this week off fresh in my newly assigned cab by going in early and cleaning it up.
I will then leave a nice little note for the nasty day driver and let him know that the condition which he has kept that taxi is unacceptable. Since I am going to do all the work at cleaning the vehicle and do my part in keeping it clean, the least he can do is his part and vacuum and hose it off at the end of his shift, as he is supposed to do.

I always carry baby wipes with me and have been wiping the inside down, each time I drive, no matter which vehicle I drive. I start with the steering wheel and work my way across the dash and on to the door handles and finally the seats.

I don't know how much cooperation I am going to get from this guy. I just found out (Saturday) that he has put in a $4. gas ticket each day he drives.

For those of you who are not hip with taxi lingo or how the operation works I'll explain this.

The Driver picks up his taxi from the cab stand. If he thinks or knows that the cab has been left short in gas, by the previous driver, then the driver will usually go to the nearest gas station and put gas in it.

They collect a receipt from the cashier and turn the receipt into the office. The amount (Currently valid for over 2 gallons of gas) on the receipt is billed back to the previous driver.

The driver who paid for the gas either takes the amount owed to them for the gas shortage off the manifest. This means that the amount the driver owes the company, at the end of the day, will be short the amount of the gas ticket.

OR the driver who paid for the shortage in gas will have to wait for the driver who owes the bill to pay up.

With that said, Note that this guy pays $10 to get to work and back each day he works. He has no vehicle of his own and has to depend upon another taxi to bring him to work and take him home. He pays each driver $5 per trip.

The owner and dispatcher have deduced that this guy is not being shorted gas, only scamming the $4 each day.

    1) I have been driving taxi since 1999, and having worked with this company on and off since 2001, they know that I ALWAYS fill the tank (right up to the top of the neck) after each shift.

    2) No matter what driver was in the cab before this guy he always puts in a $4 gas ticket.

I only have the City of Myrtle Beach to thank for this. They have destroyed the entire industry that our area thrives upon, which is tourism.

If you haven’t been following my posts you can read my explanation Hence the term ‘Severed Heart of Myrtle Beach’.

    No Sick Figures Here

I am not going to bore you with the same sick and pathetic figures with this income source

I will say that unless you have an alternative source of income and / or can budget your monies, when the getting is good, you will not make it in the taxi business on the Grand Strand, as of the date of this post.

If you work through the peak season you will be able to make enough to save for the winter, as long as the gas prices do not go up again.

    My Last Day

I am sure that you are wondering what is happening in the Taxi World around here. Check out my article:

A Day In The Life of A Taxi Driver - New Years Eve 2009

This is the last day I worked in the taxi. I called Raj and asked him if it would be ok if I return in February. "He said that would be fine, your welcome to come back any time you want to Kandi"
