I have software that blocks web bugs, pop-ups, and cookies. That I disable before doing offers - afterwards, I re-enable it.

The anti-virus/anti-trojan/firewall stay put. I think the problem is that so many people now use 'all-in-one' types of protection (like Norton or Mcafee, with the firewall, advert blocker, pop-up blocker, anti-virus, etc., all in the same programme, and maybe aren't aware of whether things are blocked or no).

If you're not sure if your software does this, ask, because somebody here who's a techie may be using the same software you are. Or you can poke around the programmes you're using and see if you see the words 'web bugs', 'web beacons', cookies, or pop-ups. Those are the only things that need to be disabled for an offer to credit.

Great information here. I have received some fake Paypal account verification request and I think my spyware and virus protection kicked in and warned me that this was a fake request and not paypal. I am not really sure if it were my actual computer protection software that could actually be credited for this warning but I was glad that I was warned! I use Spybot.

thank you for this information!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just posted a thread today on Phishing because I didn't know anything about it. At least I know what it's for now. Does this mean that I should NOT disable the Phishing Filter on my computer so noone has access to that information? I was told to disable it just in case? Do you know anything about Avast Network Shield? Should this be disabled also?

You're very informative.
Thanx

*I* am a tech person (female, too!) ... been working with computers for over 30 years now (yes, it's not a typo ... I said 30!)

Please, try NOT to disable anything security related on your computer! It's ok if you downgrade your cookie security to low, just understand that you WILL get bombarded with cookies, both good and BAD!

As for phishing ... there's quite an easy way to tell if the email sent to you is fake or not.

Let's say it's an email from "paypal" ... it looks legit ... has the logo and everything, but it wants you to "confirm" or "update" your information ... sometimes saying that your account will be "terminated" or some other "urgency" to get you to quickly click on the links. DO NOT CLICK ON ANY OF THE LINKS!!!

Instead, put your mouse pointer on the link (carefully) and just let it set there. Now, look at the bottom left hand corner of your email program or browser, if in a browser. There! Do you see the URL?? If the URL doesn't match with the supposed address that the link "points" to, then you have a phishing email.

eg. the paypal email ... the link(s) should look like this http://www.paypal.com/xxxx (whatever) -- a phishing link will look like this:
http://210.68.45.772/paypal.html (or something like that) ... in other words, it's a redirect to some bogus site made up to look like paypal!

If you see something like that ... STOP ... do not click ... instead, go to the site it's "representing" (like paypal) and look for a link like their 'Security Center'. Click on it and then look for a link to report email or a website.

The more of these they find, the better they can trace them.

As for software ... well, I have a solution ... but I can't post it because it would be soliciting!

Otherwise, I would recommend fr*ee solutions like AVG Anti Virus AND their new AVG Anti Spyware. I run that one 2 of our computers at the office along with AdAware and Spybot. You should only run ONE antivirus program but can run as many antispyware programs as you want. I run 4 on a regular basis ... and each finds different types of spyware.

After you do your Free site sessions, enable your cookies back to medium and run AT LEAST one spyware program (AdAware is good for cookies and so is AVG).

Whew! Is that enough info??

I am new in this forum. Some of the sponsor offers that one signs in and gives their credit card information require that you pay some amount of money each Month after the trial period. Can someone cancel the offer during the trial period to avoid being charged the monthly fee?

You should only be signing up for offers that interest you, so you should only be canceling offers after you have given them a fair shot and decided they are not for you. If you're able to do this before the trial period is over, then, yes it's fine to cancel--you're not obligated to keep products/services that you don't like, so long as you have given them a chance!
